One for the team

Teams racing says it all; a focus on the team. A great reminder ahead of getting back into serious training tomorrow that a team is only as good as the sum of its parts.

The NSW Teams Racing Championships at Woollahra last weekend were busy for me to say the least. I ended up on the start boat for two days, and I am pretty sure the word was that we ran 159 races… in those two days.

Congratulations to the winners. Pittwater High beat Scotts in the only two-nil final to take the NSW Schools title. USYD narrowly went down to the CYCA after there was only time for a sudden death final. Both teams came through semis that went to three races, against the two top seeded team, Northbridge, who had only lost to the Gladiators, and the Gladiators who were undefeated until the finals series.

A perfect example that every good team will have their ups and their downs, will feel the pressure, and that being able to recover is an integral part of sailing.

I was especially impressed by the CYCA team, who managed to finish one reach and a work to the finish with a broken boom, and also recovered to take a win when a toe strap broke off the start line in the round robin. They then went on to win the NSW open title, so congratulations!

I have put together a little movie of the event from some images I took on the last day of racing from the start boat. Was a pretty good view of the action I have to say! Was awesome to watch – some of the racing was awesome! Enjoy!

As for my own sailing, tomorrow begins the training for Team Chukkel’s defence of the Tasar National Championships. I don’t know whether I am skippering or crewing yet, and I don’t really mind, we have shown that we are quick with me up the back, and consistently recorded great results with Dad up the back. I am very lucky to have grown up with the exposure and involvement with such a fantastic team and I can’t wait to get out there!

Chris Eddes will be getting to know a new team today as he starts his campaign with two other Canberra boys on an 18 footer for next season – they are going to have the best day on the water and I am incredibly jealous!

Have a fantastic weekend on the water wherever you may be!
